Minyak kernel kelapa sawit atau PKO merupakan minyak yang berasal dari biji kelapa sawit. Minyak ini termasuk minyak nabati yang bisa dikonsumsi oleh manusia. PKO (Palm Kernel Oil) ini memiliki komposisi asam lemak yang hampir mirip dengan minyak kelapa. Salah satu perbedaan keduanya adalah minyak kelapa berwarna merah jingga, sedangkan PKO berwarna lebih kekuningan. Persiapan pengolahan biji kelapa sawit dilakukan sebelum inti kelapa sawit diolah dengan menggunakan mesin press kernel kelapa sawit. Biji kelapa sawit kemudian diberikan perlakuan sedemikian rupa sehingga menghasilkan inti kelapa sawit. Berikut beberapa persiapan pengolahan biji kelapa sawit yang bisa diketahui :

1. Proses Pengambilan Biji Kelapa Sawit

Hal pertama yang harus dilakukan sebelum proses pembuatan minyak inti kelapa sawit adalah proses pengambilan biji kelapa sawit.Proses ini dilakukan dengan mengambil biji kelapa sawit dari dalam buah sawitnya. Caranya adalah dengan membuka buah kelapa sawit kemudian mengambil inti sawit yang ditemukan di dalamnya.

2. Pembersihan Inti Sawit

Pembersihan inti kelapa sawit dilakukan untuk mempermudah efisiensi ekstraksi minyak dari inti kelapa sawit. Hal ini dilakukan guna menghilangkan kontaminasi material metal lainnya yang kemungkinan ada pada produk minyak olahan.

3. Mengurangi Kadar Air Inti Kelapa Sawit

Inti kelapa sawit harus dilakukan pengurangan kadar air supaya proses pemecahan biji sawit mudah untuk dilakukan. Biji sawit kemudian akan mengalami pemecahan dengan menggunakan mesin yang bernama ripple mill. Hasil dari pemecahan ini adalah terpisahnya inti dan cangkang biji.

4. Proses Pengepresan

Proses selanjutnya dari pengolahan inti sawit adalah proses pengepresan yang akan menghasilkan fiber serat biji kelapa sawit atau disebut dengan palm kernel cake. Untuk proses ekstraksi palm kernel cake ini dapat bermanfaat dalam menjadikan palm kernel cake untuk pakan ternak.

5. Proses Fermentasi

Sebelum proses ini dilakukan, biji kelapa sawit harus dipisahkan dengan fiber. Kemudian, setelah dipisahkan inti kemudian mengalami proses fermentasi dengan suatu mesin tertentu. Proses fermentasi inti kelapa sawit ini dilakukan dengan cara mengeringkan biji kelapa sawit pada suhu 60 derajat hingga 70 derajat celcius.

Pengolahan Minyak Inti Kelapa Sawit Menggunakan Mesin Press Kernel Kelapa Sawit

Tahapan selanjutnya yang dilakukan untuk membentuk minyak inti kelapa sawit atau PKO adalah proses kernel-pressing dengan menggunakan mesin press kernel kelapa sawit. Proses ini dilakukan dengan memasukkan hasil pre-processing inti kelapa sawit dalam sebuah kandang maupun barel. Barel yang digunakan berbentuk silinder yang memiliki lubang dan benang spiral terputus yang memutar.

Meskipun silinder yang digunakan tidak terlalu besar, tetapi produk kelapa sawit akan dipaksa untuk melewatinya sehingga dapat menghasilkan PKO. Sisa adari PKO ini kemudian juga disebut sebagai cake yang dibuang melalui lubang anular. Pada proses ini, minyak memiliki kemungkinan untuk rusak karena suhu yang tinggi.

Oleh karena itu, pada proses ini dilakukan pendinginan minyak dengan air untuk mencegah berbagai kerusakan. Setelah semua selesai dilakukan, maka akan dilakukan penyaringan dengan mesin vertical leaf filter di pabrik kernel kelapa sawit. Hal ini bertujuan untuk menghasilkan PKO yang murni dari Crude Oil.
